valentines day blog photoThis Valentine’s Day is expected to reach $18.6 billion in sales, slightly higher from last year, according to the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 2013 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey conducted by BIGinsight.

“Valentine’s Day remains one of the biggest gift-giving holidays of the year, and although consumers will be conscientious with their spending, it’s great to see that millions of Americans are still looking forward to celebrating with their loved ones,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “Recognizing their customers will shop for both price and value, retailers and restaurants will offer plenty of promotions for anyone looking to spoil those that mean the most to them this February 14th.”

Gifts will vary from candy, flowers, clothing and gift cards. About 19.7% will treat that special someone to jewelry, spending more than $4.4 billion on diamonds, gold and silver. Great fine religious jewelry ideas include personalized engravable bracelets, pendants and medals.

The survey also mentioned that much of the spending would be done online. The survey found that more than one-quarter (26.3%) of those celebrating this year plan to buy gifts found online, up from 19.3 percent last year and the most in the survey’s 10-year history. Other consumers will look for the perfect gift at jewelry stores (11.2%), through catalogs (2.6%), discount stores (39.6%), department stores (33.2%), specialty stores (22.9%), floral shops (19.6%), and specialty clothing stores (7.5%).  McVan retailers should contact their account representatives to learn more about McVan’s support for online stores.

Another interesting finding is the use of other devices during this Valentine’s season. Cellphone owners (40.7%) and tablet users (46.9%) are expected to research and purchase gifts right from their device. Is your website responsive?
